There has been a chemist shop on our current site since about 1860.
Our premises have a long history, initially being a coaching inn called the Green Dragon, and later being renamed the Tontine Inn in 1823. From 1860 a chemist shop shared the site with the Tontine Inn, and in 1872 the business ceased to function an Inn but continued as a Chemist and Druggist and as a wine and spirit merchant, retaining the Inn’s license to sell alcohol for consumption both on and off the premises. This license has been retained to the present day, making our pharmacy historically unique within the UK. This historical tradition is continued today through the off-license sale of fine wines and spirits from our extensive cellars.
The pharmacy itself has evolved over 150 years, and has been in the hands of the Towler family since 1978. Initially trading as RH & PM Towler, the business is now owned and run by Rory and Jo Towler who took over in 2003. While it retains much of its old world character and identity the pharmacy today offers customers a very modern and up to date service to meet their everyday health needs.
